Jeff Karp - 2011Jeffrey M. Karp graduated from Crestwood Secondary School in 1994. He earned a BEng in Chemical Engineering from McGill University in 1999 and a PhD in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 2004. He is currently Co-Director of the Center for Regenerative Therapeutics at Brigham & Women's Hospital, an Associate Professor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Principal Faculty at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, and he is Affiliate Faculty at MIT. He has been recognized as one of the world’s top innovators under age 35 by MIT's Technology Review Magazine, Popular Mechanics included one of his technologies in the “Top 20 New Biotech Breakthroughs that Will Change Medicine”, and Boston Business Journal named him a 2011 Champion in Healthcare. He has co-authored several publications and book chapters and has more than 25 patents. | Andrew Koshowski 2011Jagori Tanna (a.k.a. Andrew Koshowski) graduated from Crestwood Secondary School in 1985. Shortly after graduation, Jagori and his brother, Christian, another Crestwood graduate, moved to Toronto and formed the critically acclaimed band I Mother Earth. As the principle songwriters, and with Jag producing, they went on to tour the world and record several multi-platinum albums, receiving multiple Junos, and winning numerous MuchMusic awards. Jag has also received several Gemini Award nominations with his Peterborough-based film production company, Segment X. Jag has since returned home with his family to Peterborough and continues to work in music and film. He is developing programs that involve students in A/V production, and has launched a community based non-profit organization called BigTimeGiving. |
Chris Koshowski - 2011Christian Tanna (a.k.a. Chris Koshowski) graduated from Crestwood Secondary School in 1985. Not long after moving to Toronto with his younger brother, Jag (a.k.a. Andrew Koshowski), also a Crestwood graduate, they formed the band I Mother Earth. Chris played drums and wrote all of the lyrics for the band which went on to sell over a million albums worldwide, reaching triple platinum status in Canada alone, as well as winning several Junos and MuchMusic Awards. After recording four albums and touring the world, Chris settled into life at home with his wife and child. Some of Chris’ projects since have included playing with other performers, event creation and production, as well as being employed by one of the biggest music agencies in Canada as an agent. Coming full circle, Chris is currently the general manager and talent buyer for Peterborough’s largest event centre, The Venue. Happy to be settled back in the Peterborough area, Chris is still a proud Crestwood graduate and misses that stage in the cafeteria where he made a lot of noise for a few years. | Glynis Ranney - 2012Glynis Ranney graduated from Crestwood S.S. in 1985. She was born in Toronto and moved to Peterborough at age five. After graduation, Glynis went to the University of Waterloo to pursue a Liberal Arts degree. Her passion for theatre was ignited by the Charlottetown Festival when her family moved to P.E.I. After completing her degree, Glynis went on to major in Theatre Studies at Dalhousie University. Since graduating in 1990, she has worked across Canada as an actor and singer in a variety of theatres, including the Stratford, Shaw and Charlottetown Festivals, Tarragon Theatre, Canadian Stage, and the National Arts Centre. Some of the productions in which she played the lead include Mack and Mabel, The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, My Fair Lady, The Mikado, and Anne of Green Gables. She has won several awards including The Peter Mews Award at the Charlottetown Festival (1992) and, in 2002, she won a Dora Mavor Moore Award for outstanding performance by a female in a musical in Anything That Moves. Glynis and her family live in Stratford, Ontario. |
Dr. Malcolm Moore - 2013Graduated from Crestwood Secondary School in 1971. Dr. Malcolm J. Moore is the Daniel E. Bergsagel Professor of Medical Oncology and the Head of Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre; he is a professor of medicine and pharmacology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Moore did his medical training at the University of Western Ontario and his Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Clinical Pharmacology training at the University of Toronto. Dr. Moore’s major research interest is in new drug development for pancreatic cancer. He is director of the Bras Family New Drug Development Program and the McCain Centre for Pancreatic Cancer at Princess Margaret Hospital. He has been instrumental in the development of a number of drugs that have been approved for clinical usage in pancreatic cancer and colorectal cancer. He is the current president of the International Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology. Dr. Moore has published over 250 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and has given over 200 invited lectures worldwide. |
Robert J. Adamson - 2014
Graduated from Crestwood Secondary School in 1970. He earned both his BA and his MA at the University of Toronto in 1974 and 1976, respectively. Robert spent time travelling in Peru and across Canada before earning his Law Degree from the University of Toronto in 1982. Robert worked in refugee camps for victims of war in El Salvador, and worked with immigrants in Canada, before being called to the Bar in 1985. For the next nine years, Robert worked as an immigration lawyer in Toronto. In 1992 Robert received The (Governor General of Canada’s) Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada for recognition to compatriots, community and to Canada. During the years 1991-1993, he worked with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), travelling to Switzerland, Nairobi, Mogadishu, and, especially, Croatia, where he eventually took over the UNHCR office there. In 1994 Robert was sworn in as a judge on the Immigration and Refugee Board by the Government of Canada. Robert J. Adamson died suddenly in 1995. |
Sara Wilshaw - 2015Graduated from Crestwood Secondary School in 1990 and moved to Valencia, Spain on a Rotary scholarship. She returned to Canada to attend York University and received her B.A. in International Relations and Economics; then worked as a Customs Inspector in Toronto and at Statistics Canada prior to joining the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development in 1996. Since that time, Ms. Wilshaw has been assigned to the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, Canada’s Permanent Mission to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, and as the head of Canada’s bilateral trade program with India, based at the High Commission in New Delhi. In Ottawa, Ms. Wilshaw has provided leadership on a diverse range of issues including the Global Commerce Strategy and the Government’s Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy for the Extractive Sector. In January 2015, Sara Wilshaw was appointed Consul General of Canada to the South Central United States, based in Dallas, Texas, where she now has responsibility for protecting and promoting Canada’s interests in the region including New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas. |
Dr. William Swales - 2016Dr William (Bill) Swales graduated from Crestwood in 1981. He received his B.Sc. In Ecology from the University of Western Ontario and his M.D.C.M from McGill University in 1988. Following his residency at McGill University he practiced for 15 years as an acute care physician. In addition he was the Medical Director of a civilian international medical evacuation company, working in such disparate locations as Iran, the West Bank in Palestine, Eastern Europe as well as the Caribbean basin. In 2005 Dr Swales spent some time working at the Mother of Peace AIDS Orphanage in Mutoko Zimbabwe . In 2006 he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and was trained as a Flight Surgeon at Defence Research Development Canada in Toronto. During his career in the CAF he rose to the rank of Major as Wing Surgeon for Canada's largest Air Force Base in Trenton, Ont. He retired from the CAF as Regional Surgeon at 4th Canadian Division Headquarters in Toronto as medical advisor to all CAF bases in Task Force Central Canada. During his military career Major Swales served two tours in Afghanistan and the Middle East, a tour in Libya as well as being the senior Flight Surgeon involved in treating and evacuating Canadian citizens in Haiti immediately following the catastrophic earthquake of 2010. He received a Chief of the Air Force commendation for his work in Haiti, a Task Force Commander's commendation for his work in Libya, a Queen's Jubilee medal for exemplary service as well as a Chief of the Defence Staff Commendation for bravery. Dr Swales returned to private practice in Peterborough in 2016 and is currently focused on skin cancer detection and treatment. |
Brian M. Atyeo - 2017Graduated from Crestwood in 1970. Toronto-born Atyeo moved with his family to Peterborough in 1963. After graduation, Mr. Atyeo returned to Toronto, painting scenic Toronto and rural Ontario. Following work as a junior illustrator with a Calgary design firm, he formed the Atyeo Illustration & Design Company in 1975, specializing in Architectural Illustration. In 1992, he closed his business and devoted himself to his own art full-time, as an interpretive painter of Canada’s landscape from coast to coast. He is considered one of the country’s most skilled watercolourists, with numerous solo shows nation-wide. His rendering in acrylics with new visions has placed him in the forefront of today’s new medium painters. His teaching methods are considered the benchmark for art teachers across North America. In addition, Mr. Atyeo has donated over $100,000 worth of art to Ducks Unlimited Canada, and gifted paintings to hospitals for display and fundraising. Mr. Atyeo is a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, and featured in numerous books and magazines. His work hangs in corporate, government and private collections, both nationally and internationally. Currently, Mr. Atyeo lives in Killarney, Ontario. |
